NYFW Backstage: Brian Reyes

SHOW: Brian Reyes
MAKEUP: Nicolas Degennes for Givenchy
MODEL: Yana, DNA
THE LOOK: The main focus was to increase the look of the eyes. When Nicolas Degennes spoke with designer Brian Reyes, he mentioned a marbleized fabric, which Nicolas used for his inspiration. He started by rimming the inner eyes a really dark black kajal pencil and at the outer corners, worked with brown, black and khaki shadows. “It’s a mix of three or four colors to get that marble effect on the eyes,” explained Nicolas. Skin was kept natural and clean with a light dust of powder on the t-zone and a touch of shine on the cheek. Lips were a rosy beige, but more on the beige side than pink.

OSCAR Beauty Looks

Diane Lane @ Academy Awards 2009

Inspiration: “The first thing I noticed when I saw Diane was her va va voom black dress! I wanted her makeup to be super sexy and stong, like she is. Because it was the Oscars, I focused on bumping up the eyes with lots of mascara and lashes, and sent her down the carpet glowing and gorgeous.”

Get the Look
Rachel opened up Diane’s eyes with browns and taupes from the CHANEL Quadra Eye Shadow in Demure. She created a sultry look with soft browns in the crease and a soft ivory on the lids up to the brow bone.

The eyes were lined with an Elizabeth Arden smoky eye pencil, and several coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black gave her a dramatic, seductive look. To give Diane’s skin a dewy, glowing look, Rachel applied CHANEL Teint Innocence Naturally Luminous Fluid Makeup mixed with a bit of Neutrogena Oil-Free Moisturizer.

On the contours of the cheeks, she applied a peach cream blush from Jouer. Finally, to complete the strong, sexy look, Rachel gave Diane a bold orangey red lip with CHANEL Hydrabase Lipstick in Fuego.

Halle Berry @ Academy Awards 2009
Mara Roszak, TRESemmé Celebrity Stylist, created Halle’s gorgeous hairstyle…for under $15!

1. Apply TRESemmé Thermal Creations Straightening Gel on wet hair from roots to ends. Blow-dry hair with a medium-sized round brush, creating movement and lift.
2. Then, curl random sections of hair using a 1 1/4 inch curling iron, spraying each section with TRESemmé TRES TWO Ultra Fine Mist hairspray before curling. Apply a small amount of TRESemmé 24 Hour Body Weightless Crème onto hands, rub together, and brush out curls with fingertips, giving hair body and shine.
3. Next, pull hair into a mid-height pony, twisting it into a loose chignon, pinning as you go. Be sure to leave out some pieces to give it an organic look.
4. Finally, spray with TRESemmé TRES TWO Ultra Fine Mist hairspray to hold chignon.

The inspiration behind Heidi Klum’s Oscar beauty look began with her Roland Mouret gown. The graphic silhouette and bold red color of the dress required a softer, natural face to compliment the design rather than compete with it.

Make-up artist Linda Hay wanted to bring out on Heidi’s dramatic eyes and also incorporate the powder pink color of the coral and diamond Lorraine Schwartz jewelry on the lips and cheeks. Linda sought to create a look that was light and dewy while still modern and sexy.

Get the Look
Eyes: Linda began by lining the top and bottom lashes with Victoria’s Secret Very Sexy Eyeliner in Dark Chocolate and highlighting the inside triangle of the eye with a shimmering nude eye shadow in Champagne. She then used the Victoria Secret Spring Look Eye Shadow Quad to highlight the eyes and make them pop. Using a large shadow brush, Hay applied Rich to the crease, Devoted to the eyelid and Champagne again as a highlighter under the brow and the inside corner of the eye. Using a smaller point shadow brush she blended a soft line under the eye from the outside corner to the tear duct. To finish, Linda applied three coats of Victoria’s Secret High Definition Mascara in Blackest Black.

Cheeks: On the cheeks, Linda used the new Victoria’s Secret Highlighter/Blush Duo in Fresh to the apple of the cheek to create the allusion of more defined bone structure.

Lips: Linda lined the lips with the Perfect Lipstick in Whisper followed by Victoria’s Secret Lip Gloss in Blush for subtle pink finish.

Anne Hathaway @ Academy Awards 2009

Get the Look
Anne Hathaway looked regal in a sparkling jewel encrusted Armani Privé gown. Her makeup look was sophisticated and elegant. Anne’s perfect brows framed her face and her long, lush lashes really made her eyes pop. She donned a deep berry-toned lip to complete her look.

To get Anne’s look, try Lancôme Le Crayon Poudre in Sable to fill in and shape the brows. Lightly dust Lancôme Color Design Eye Shadow in Ciel du Soir over the entire eyelid followed by Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony applied to the upper lash line. Lightly smudge so there are no harsh lines. Apply several coats of Lancôme Ôscillation Mascara for a faux-lash effect. For just a hint of color, dust Lancôme Blush Subtil in Sheer Amourose on the apples of the cheeks. To create her berry stained pout, apply Lancôme Color Fever Lipstick in Brickhouse.

Amy Adams @ Academy Awards 2009

Inspiration: A cross between Talouse Latrec’s dancing girls and the watercolor feeling of a Gustav Klimt painting. The day was amazing. The goal was to make sure that her makeup was saturated but not overdone.

Get the Look
Molly Stern, makeup artist, started by prepping the face with Jurlique citrus spray to give the face a healthy lift then she gave Amy a light facial massage with La Mer moisturizing lotion. Next she based her face with YSL perfect touch #2. Then she blushed her cheeks with Chantecaille Aqua Blush in Frivolous as a peachy base with Chantecaille Sesame peach eyeshadow over top. Her eyes are based with NARS cream eyeshadow in Maracaibo. Over that she blended Shu Uemura shadow in gray 960 mixed with shu uemura shadow in purple 700 all over the lid up into the crease. With a flat shadow brush she added a touch of NARS shadow in Ondine on the inside corner of her lid to give the eye a little gold hint. Molly lined the top and underneath of her eye with Trish McEvoy’s Arabian nights definer. To soften the line underneath she added a soft smudge of Suqqu lavender shadow in #27.

On her lashes she put 1 soft coat of CoverGirl Exact Eyelights Mascara in Black Ruby. On her lip, Molly based her lip with La Mer lipbalm then applied a thin coat of Outlast Lipstain by CoverGirl in Plum Pout. Then a sheer layer of Shu Uemura wine lip color in 265 with a dot of CoverGirl Wetslicks AmazeMint in Plum Crazy at the center of her lip for a little extra pout. That’s also what she took in her bag for touch ups.

Jennifer Aniston @ Academy Awards 2009

Inspiration
“When I spoke to Jen before the Oscars, we decided we wanted to create a look that exuded modern glamour. She had just returned from vacation, and she had that relaxed, glowing feeling, which we wanted to display on the red carpet. She is the quintessential California glamour girl, and she was radiant as always on Oscar night.”

Angela prepped Jennifer’s skin with CHANEL Hydramax + Active Moisture Boost Cream. She then used a foundation brush to apply CHANEL Lift Lumiere Firming and Smoothing Fluid Makeup in Beige all over the face. Under Jennifer’s eyes, Angela applied CHANEL Lift Lumiere Smooth and Rejuvinating Eye Contour in Beige Lumiere. Instead of a traditional blush, Angela dabbed a bit of CHANEL Hydrabase Lipstick in Coco Red on the apples of Jennifer’s cheeks. She then applied CHANEL Sheer Brilliance in Sunkissed around the tops of her cheekbones, closer to the eye, for a bit of shimmer.

Jennifer’s eyes were a combination of LORAC eye shadows in Jade, Black, and Serenity, and a Tina Earnshaw shadow in Aubergine. Her lashes looked extra glamorous thanks to CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black. On Jennifer’s lips, Angela used CHANEL Aqualumiere Lipshine in Panarea, available in April. To complete the look, she dusted Soleil Tan de CHANEL Bronzer on Jennifer’s skin, an exclusive creation product from CHANEL also launching in April.

Queen Latifah @ Academy Awards 2009

Inspiration: “Latifah’s dress is very elegant, modern and chic, and her hair needs to complement this, so we decided on a modern chignon which features very smooth hair, a side part, bangs that swoop down in front, a low bun in the back that is off to the side.”

Get the Hair
To achieve this glamorous modern look, Baker will dry Latifah’s hair using the new FHI Heat Nano Salon Pro 2100 blow dryer, then apply FHI Heat Hot Sauce, a heat-activated conditioner that protects hair, to slightly damp hair. Last, she will use her favorite FHI Heat Runway styling iron to smooth out Latifah’s tresses, before styling it into a chignon.

Natalie Portman @ Academy Awards 2009

Jeanine was going for a smoky eye, and used CHANEL Silky Eye Shadow Duo in Orient Express. She used the pale pink as a base and the dark purple smoked around the eye on the lid and smudged in lower lash line. She added CHANEL Intense Eye Pencil in Noir inside the eye, and lots of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black for thick sexy lashes. She used CHANEL Perfect Brows in Brun, using the two colours to make a strong brow, but keeping it soft.

Jeanine then used CHANEL Powder Blush in Narcisse, a flattering, bright pink shade, high on the cheek bones. She then added CHANEL Glossimer in Galactic for a more pale lavender lip. Finally, for a sexy, bronze sheen, Jeanine applied CHANEL Sheer Brilliance in Sunkissed on Natalie’s arms, shoulders, and décolleté.

Kate Winslet @ Academy Awards 2009

Jillian Dempsey for Avon Pro Eyeshadow Trio in Ice Shimmer was applied to the eyes and the lashes were coated with Jillian Dempsey for Avon Pro Mascara in Black. Makeup artist Gita Bass created Tina Fey’s red carpet look for the 2009 Oscars. Gita shares her red carpet tips and techniques for creating Tina’s makeup look yourself.

Luminous Skin: “Glowing radiant skin is a must on the red carpet! I love using the Elizabeth Arden Mineral Powder Foundation-it contains mica which reflects light creating a luminous finish that’s never greasy, and it is virtually invisible on the skin, perfect for HD.”

Smoky Eyes: “I wanted to give Tina a soft smoky eye, so I chose a gunmetal shade in
stead of a harsh black. The Elizabeth Arden Smoky Eyes Powder Pencil is the perfect tool as it delivers a great amount of pigment and it blends beautifully. Adding a little shimmer on the inner corners and the upper lid creates a 3 dimensional finish that really pops.”

Sexy Lashes: “To accentuate Tina’s sexy feline shaped eyes, I added some individual lashes on the outer corners of the upper lid. Curl the lashes and add 2 coats of mascara before adding the lashes-this way you can see where the gaps are and just fill them in.”

Bold Lip: “A natural lip is a great compliment to a smoky eye. I chose Elizabeth Arden Color Intrigue Effects Lipstick in Pink Honey Pearl. It’s sheer enough to not compete with the eye but contains a hint of gold to add some warmth to the face.

…For added staying power, line the lips with a liner the same color as your lip, fill in the line and then layer the lipstick over the top. To create an even sexier pout, add a sheer layer of pink gloss - I used Elizabeth Arden High Shine Lip Gloss in Pink Pout.

Makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff created Alicia Keys’ glamorous red carpet look for the 2009 Oscars. Ashunta reveals her inspiration and application techniques for creating Alicia’s makeup at home.

“I wanted to make a separation for Alicia Keys the 12 time award winning grammy artist and Alicia Keys the emerging actress. The dress was a gorgeous Magenta Armani Prive’ gown with a sultry front split. I was inspired by Veronica Lake, Lena Horne and the women in Hollywood in the 40’s and early 50’s so bold lips, luminous skin, strong brows and sultry eyes are all a must!!!”

“I started by prepping skin with Elizabeth Arden Gold Ceramide Capsules to hydrate the skin and make the skin have a radiant glow, then applied Elizabeth Arden Pure Finish Mineral Powder 5.”

“Under eye circles were masked with Mary Kay Beige 2 concealer. Next I used Queen Collection bronzer in Light Bronze to sculpt and contour her face. I then brought in an eye liner to smoke lower lashes using Elizabeth Arden Black Smoky Eyes Pencil in Black. I added Shu Uemura Smoky Layers Lashes for drama.”

“Brows are such a key point of the face and the women of the 40’s and 50’s always had amazing ones. So I used a brunette brow pencil from Dior and softened it with Dior Blonde Shimmer brow gel.”

“The bold hibiscus colored lip set off the lavender and pink tones Alicia had on. Because the lip was so vibrant I knew I would need to use Elizabeth Arden’s Ceramide Plump Perfect Lip Moisture so that the lip color would last and plump up lips. I used Mary Kay lip pencil in Raspberry all over the lips filling it in so her lips had lasting power and finished the look with Mary Kay Fleur De Polynesie which is a gorgeous pink.”

Angelina Jolie @ Academy Awards 2009

Get the Look
Angelina Jolie looked stunning in a black strapless Elie Saab gown paired with beautiful emerald-colored jewels which added a striking burst of color. Celebrity makeup artist Mary Burton created Angelina’s flawless look. Mary applied Le Crayon Khôl in Black Ebony to the upper and lower lash lines. She emphasized the shape of Angelina’s eyes by applying more liner to the outer corners of the eye. Several coats of Ôscillation Mascara were applied to the upper lashes for added volume and length. Mary put a touch of pink to the cheeks using Shu Uemura Blush in M Pink 31 and applied it to her cheekbones near the temple. To create ultra-shiny and luminous lips, Mary used Juicy Tubes in Spring Fling.

Get the Hair

To achieve this romantic cascade of curls, I sprayed Angie’s entire head with David Babaii for WildAid Bohemian Beach Spray and scrunched it into the hair (this gives just the right texture and hold).

Next, I dried her hair by dividing her tresses into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Taking small sections starting at the nape, I used the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment and finish the drying process with a large round brush to smooth hair straight. At the crown area, I sprayed David Babaii for WildAid Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier to the root area and down the hair shaft. Then, I dried this section with a jumbo round brush to add lift and volume.

Once dry, I sectioned the hair again using the same sectioning process as I did for blow drying. Using the David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron, I once again sectioned the hair into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. To curl, use the Styling Iron to create “ribbon curls” by taking small “V” shaped sections. To achieve, I wrapped the hair around and inside the styling iron close to the scalp area and pull the iron down (similar to curling ribbon).

After curling the entire head, I smoothed some of the curls with a brush while leaving some intact. At the crown area, I back-brushed the hair at the scalp area only, sprayed some additional Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier and gently smoothed the surface not to remove too much of the back-brushing. Next, to create her half-up, half down look, I brushed the sides up and back and secured with pins. To complete the back, I ran my fingers up several curls to create volume and variations in texture. For a long but natural lasting hold, I used David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray.

Styling Tip: Why so much sectioning? It is vital to have constant control of your hair at all times. You will never miss an area or a section.

Nicole Kidman @ Academy Awards 2009

Inspiration: “When I asked Nicole what we wanted to do for the Oscars, she told me she just wanted to look beautiful! So I decided to go for basic, beautiful makeup that shows who she is - an unbelievable beauty, timeless and glamorous. Her look was pure and gorgeous, just as it should be for the 81st Academy Awards.”

Angela prepped Nicole’s skin with he favorite skin care product, CHANEL Hydramax + Active Moisture Boost Cream. On her eyes, she used the sultry shades from the CHANEL Quadra Eye Shadow in Reflets d’Ombre. Several coats of CHANEL Inimitable Mascara in Noir-Black were applied to create a glamorous, modern eye.She applied CHANEL Blush Duo Tweed Effect in Tweed Rose on Nicole’s cheekbones. For an added flawless effect, Angela used CHANEL Natural Finish Pressed Powder in Translucent 1 all over Nicole’s face.To create a sophisticated, glossy wine coloured lip, she applied CHANEL Aqualumiere Gloss in Bubble Plum.

After thoroughly towel drying, I applied David Babaii for WildAid Amplifying Whipped Mousse for volume and hold. I dried the hair by dividing it into 3 sections: top, sides and back leaving the nape area free. Creating small sections, start at the nape and use the David Babaii for WildAid Blow Dryer with the nozzle attachment. I dried each section with a medium round brush to smooth and create a soft round bend to the ends. Once again, section the hair into 3 sections: top with a side part, sides and back leaving the nape area free.

To create waves, I formed “V” shaped pieces and use the David Babaii for WildAid Styling Iron. I then ran the styling iron down the hair shaft from close to the roots to the ends to create a sleek, smooth look. Then I repeated, half way down the hair shaft utilize the beveled edge by turning the styling iron (like a curling iron) to create a soft curl.

I clipped each curl and sprayed with David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray. I then alternated the direction of each row of curls in order to achieve a finger wave effect. When finished, gently brush and form into soft waves using my David Babaii for WildAid Mise en Plis Light Styling Spray for a soft long lasting hold. To finish, I brushed back one side and secured with a decorative hair pin.

Styling Tip: Use “V” shaped sections helps to eliminate the appearance of partings.

New York-based celebrity hair stylist, Dante Blandshaw, created the stunning red carpet look for Academy Award® nominee, Taraji Henson (“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”). “This is a clean, fresh, modern take on a layered, textured bob,” said Blandshaw. “I wanted to create a modern, asymmetrical, textured bob with natural movement and shine.” Blandshaw shares expert tips on how he used Aveda products to achieve the look:

I started with Aveda Brilliant Shampoo and Aveda Brilliant Conditioner to soften Taraji’s textured hair,” said Blandshaw. “I love the Aveda Brilliant line because it provides a smooth shine to textured hair and reduces blow dry time.”Prep hair with Aveda Brilliant Damage Control to protect from heat styling.Blow dry hair straight using a paddle brush. After blow drying, add a dime-sized amount of Aveda Brilliant Universal Styling Creme to add additional shine without weighing hair down.Flat-iron hair to create the foundation for a smooth, sleek red carpet look.Using 1.5” and 2” barrel curling irons, curl hair throughout to give bend and movement, accenting the layers in the cut.Slightly curl the front to create a soft, side-swept bang for added height and fullness.Comb hair through with a wide-tooth comb.Spray with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray for a light finish. “Aveda Air Control Hair Spray is a perfect complement to this look because its lightweight formula provides lasting hold and shine without weighing hair down,” said Blandshaw.

Freida Pinto by Aveda - 2009 Oscars

Celebrity stylist, Jeffrey Paul, created a fresh and elegant red carpet hair look for Frieda Pinto. Radiant in John Galliano, Pinto’s hair is divided into three parts and twisted back into an architectural, couture flower shape on the right side of the head. “This look has a beautiful architecture; hair is twisted back into a youthful, feminine flower shape that complements Frieda’s face shape and stunning Galliano gown.

Start with Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Shampoo and Aveda Pure Abundance Volumizing Clay Conditioner.Mix a cocktail of Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip. Work the product into wet hair to add texture and volume. “When creating an updo, it’s important to use products that give thickness and body,” said Paul. “Pinto’s hair already has a lot of shine. The cocktail of Aveda Phomollient Styling Foam and Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip provided just the right amount of hold, body and texture without weighing hair down.”Blow dry hair back to add lift and height at the roots.
Create a left side part and divide hair into three sections: three quarters of hair in one section on the right and the remaining hair into two smaller sections. Pull the right section of hair back into a low ponytail just behind the right ear above the nape of the neck. Twist the ponytail, working Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into hair. Wrap the ponytail around the base, creating a flower shape. Secure in place with pins. Work Aveda Light Elements Defining Whip into each of the remaining sections and twist back and around the flower shape, creating a layered, rose-like effect. “The three twists flow together for beautiful movement,” said Paul. Finish the look with Aveda Air Control Hair Spray. Lastly, shake the head a bit to loosen up the look and provide a sense of natural movement.

This year, at the 81st Annual Academy Awards Sarah Jessica Parker, sought dramatic eyes paired with a pale pink lip.

Christina Zilber, founder of Jouer Cosmetics teaches us easy ways to get the celebrity look: “The dramatic eye paired with a pale lip creates a fresh and romantic feel, perfect for formal occasions.” Other celebrities sporting this makeup look include Robin Wright Penn and Freida Pinto.

How to get Sarah Jessica Parker’s Oscars 2009 red carpet makeup look:
The most important aspect to the celebrity look is flawless skin. Christina recommends beginning by lightly evening your complexion using the Jouer luminizing moisture tint followed by the Jouer age-repairing brightner where necessary, around the eyes, the nose and the corners of the mouth, follow by a light dusting of the Jouer mineral face powder. Christina then recommends applying a light peach or pink blush to the apple of the cheek for a fresh, youthful glow. For the eyes, she recommends drawing a thick line on the top and bottom eyelid with Jouer’s eye definer “Noir”. Using a large flat eye brush, Christina recommends applying the Jouer’s powder eyeshadow “caviar” - a shimmering navy charcoal, to the lid of the eyes, compliment with “truffle” - a matte platinum grey on the crease of the eye, followed by “parfait” - shimmering deep lavender on the brow line. Follow the look with two coats of the Jouer mascara “black” to both the top and bottom lashes. For that perfectly pale baby pink lip, Zilber recommends the Jouer amelie lipstick followed by the Jouer mist gloss to add a bit of shimmer and shine.
