“Karl Lagerfeld showed me a sketch he had drawn of a girl with smoky eyes, so it was clear that we would put the focus on the eyes for this show. The inspiration for the color came from the black-white-green French garden that was recreated in the Grand Palais, from the glow that we can find in black, grey and white pearls, and the enamel that Karl integrated into the costume jewelry. I created deep, dark smoky eyes on a luminous fresh face with tinted, dewy lips. A modern seductress was makeup artist Pat McGrath’s take on the look’s dewy skin and glossy red orange-y lips.

GET THE LOOK
Glossy red mouth that McGrath painted onto pouts with a brush dipped into a mixture of not one, not two, but three different scarlet pigments for the “orangey-red” color was the main attention.

“It’s something different from the retro and vintage looks out there,” said McGrath, who credited the look’s contemporary feel to well-prepped light, luminous skin created using NatureLuxe silk foundation by Cover Girl. Taupe and bronze eye shadow offered a hint of the traditional vamp. The eye was glossy courtesy of a slick of Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream on top. Finishing touches came in the form of CoverGirl’s LashBlast Fusion mascara and MAC Lacquer in Shirelle, a cherry red varnish applied to fingers and pedicured toes.

Luigi Mureno attached thin bronze leather hair bands — created for the show and which matched the collection’s handbags and shoes — to hold together even the shortest locks with a sculptural flourish. John Frieda’s Frizz Ease serum was used to mold the style’s sleek side part Mureno described as military.

“Giorgio Armani wanted a really intense look,” said Linda Cantello backstage. “This is obviously Armani so although we’re giving model’s a sandy, dirty look they need to be groomed and beautiful.”

The look’s midnight blue shading was created using a new eye shadow called Contrast Velvet from Giorgio Armani. The navy shade was smudged liberally above and below eyes, whilst black lashes and dark brows added to its intensity and complemented the collection’s turban-style hats. “It’s a new way to create a smoky eye,” said Cantello.

A bare lip and matte face with swathes of ochre blush and Luminizing Giorgio Armani foundation complimented the look’s soulful eyes.

Working a “fab eye” into the royal coming-out party, makeup artist Gucci Westman put her own spin on this season’s bright shadow and liner trend with emerald lids inspired by the gown worn by Freja Beha Erichsen.

Finger-blending the bright green shade from Revlon’s ColorStay 12 Hour Eyeshadow Quad in Silver Fox with its Matte Eyeshadow in Venetian Blue, Westman added an unexpected twist to demure de la Renta beauty. One thing did hark back to the designer’s classic, ladylike aesthetic, though; a de la Renta princess is tattoo-free, which meant that inked-up catwalkers, like Erichsen, were touched up with Ben Nye’s Total Conceal All Wheel before they hit the runway.

The third show that Lancome did during New York Fashion Week was the L'Wren Scott show. Aaron De Mey, artistic director for makeup, worked with hair stylist Odile Gilbert on the beauty look for the show.

GET THE LOOK
Lancôme creative director of makeup Aaron De Mey debuted something special for the occasion: 12 different matte texture pigment pots in shades like deep amethyst, midnight blue, sea green, teal, saffron, and red, which he meticulously brushed onto models’ lids and dragged underneath their lower lash lines. Lancôme’s Color Design Eye Shadow in It List, a matte black, held the loose pigment in place, and De Mey sculpted the crease of the lids with a “beachy” taupe shadow for dimension. “The more layers you have in the eye makeup, the more richness you get,” he said, lining girls’ inner rims with Lancôme’s Le Grand Kohl Eyeliner in Black Ebony and hand-painting lashes with its Hypnôse Drama mascara.

De Mey’s specialized pigments weren’t just confined to the eyes; hairstylist Odile Gilbert also brushed coordinating colors onto models’ scalps, where she had created a three-quarters part—not down the center or to the side, but somewhere in between—for beautiful brushed-out waves. In De Mey’s estimation, 60 percent of the shadows used already exist in Lancôme’s color coffers, but the brand hinted that it will likely be rolling out a capsule collection of them in collaboration with Scott after her first beauty range for the French company debuts next month.

The lip is a mix of Color Design lipstick in Oh My and Juicy Tubes in Touched by Light. Aaron also used the new Teint Miracle foundation.

L'Wren wanted two different nail polishes for the show. As one of the colors, she used the sparkly red from her upcoming holiday collection for Lancome. For the second shade, she asked Lancome to create a brilliant shimmery orange - saffron inspired by the Serengeti sunset.

A shade of hand-mixed, minty-lime pigment was custom-blended for the show to evoke a sense of incipient spring. It was subtle—barely noticeable from afar, save for a lovely highlight that emanated from the brow bone, underneath which Philips had swiped the homespun shadow. Chanel’s Pro Lumière foundation was used for the base, and Poudre Universelle Libre was dusted on top. Toenails were painted with Chanel Holographic polish, whose effect was meant to echo that of bags and belts on Van Noten’s runway.

CoverGirl’s LashBlast Length Mascara in Black was applied to upper lashes only to create a dark alluring eye. CoverGirl’s Professional Eye Enhancer eye shadow in Mink was applied to the eyelids whilst brows were defined and strengthened using Anastasia Perfect Brow Pencil in brown.

Hair was slicked back using Redken’s 016 Hardwear Gel before being twisted into a low knot and covered in black PVC squares. Before the models hit the runway, hair was smeared in Redken’s Glass 01 Smoothing Serum for a glossy edge to the no-nonsense style.

At the Dolce&Gabbana Spring/Summer 2011 Ready to Wear show in Milan, Dolce&Gabbana evoked the relaxed elegance of Sicilian sensuality. The collection’s easy glamour was also evident in the palette used on models’ eyes and lips, each taken from Dolce&Gabbana The Make Up.

For the face, apply a light layer of foundation that appears sheer and almost transparent. Next, apply blush in the 'Whisper' shade and brush on cheekbones. For eyes, start by applying a light layer of concealer over any dark circles. With a fluffy brush, apply a coral brown cream into the crease as well as the outside corners in order to give the eye shape. Continue with a little coral on the lower lash line. Smooth a dry brush over the cream to blend in the color. Finish by dusting a little translucent powder on top to hold the color in place. On the pout, mix Sheer Lipstick in Tea Rose and Petal for a delicate rosy color.

For nails, apply two layers of a beige color called Fashion. Finish with a shiny top layer of Addicted to Speed.

Eyebrows were defined slightly with a brown eyeshadow, while lips were coated with Dare Devil lipstick followed by three thick layers of lip gloss in Cardinal Sin.

Pat McGrath dreamed up a makeup look based on a young woman's travels in New Mexico for the Twenty8Twelve show. Stylist Sam McKnight, meanwhile, opted for a slightly disheveled look for hair. "The girl is a London girl, a cool girl," he said, describing a look resembling a woman's hair one or two days after it had been perfectly groomed.

GET THE LOOK
Working with Max Factor, McGrath created what she called "sunny skin" usingMax Factor bronzer. The look also incorporated brown mascara and beige eyeliner. A strong lip was created using a mix of Max Factor lipstick in Bewitching Coral and Intensely Red.

Working with Pantene products, he worked Ice Shine Volumizing Mousse into center-parted hair before blow drying and using tongs to add movement to random sections. "That's not for curl, but to smooth the hair and to give wave and body," he explained. He then loosely braided large sections of hair and used a straightener to clamp the plaits. The braids were then released and the hair gently tousled. He finished the look with Flexible Hold hairspray.

When Krakoff and Page discussed the makeup for the runway show, the focus was simple. "Really, we just wanted the girls to look cool," said Dick Page.

GET THE LOOK
Rather than kooky stuff-that looks amazing but doesn't always translate to real life-seen on some runways, Page says these colors and textures "won't show up as a 'makeup look'." Instead, it's all about a halo of shimmery pewter cream shadow (a combo of dark olive-bronze and black prototypes that will launch in Fall 2011) smudged onto the eyelids, gradating from dark to light from lashes to brows. He finished with a slightly matte "soft mauve-y brown" lip -Perfect Rouge Glowing Matte Lipstick in Wink- and a dusting of Translucent Loose Powder to tone down shine.

Much like the designer of the line, the L.A.M.B. models got an edgy look for the runway show, held Thursday. “Gwen’s inspiration was multiethnic — her collection this season includes Scottish, African and Japanese prints — and we wanted to express that in the hair,” said Danilo, who coiffed the models at the show. Charlotte Willer, doing the makeup for Maybelline, went for a “glam, tribal, punk” look.

GET THE LOOK
HAIR
First, Danilo added hair extensions to any short-haired girls, then applied L’Oréal Professionnel Serie Expert Density Spray to the hair. Next, he blew the hair dry for added texture and separated it into three sections, braiding each one. Each model got a slightly different braid placement — “We’re doing many different tribes, not just one,” said Danilo — and each braid was looped through itself, making the look slightly messy and “cool with a hint of androgynous,” said Danilo. Hair was finished with L’Oréal Texture Expert Infinium Spray for strong hold.

MAKEUP
Use Eye Shadow Quad in Give Me Gold #5 to highlight the browbones, inner corners and the tops of the cheekbones. Run the copper shade from the inside of the orb through the crease in a half circle, blending well to smoke it out into a cat's eye shape. Add the yellow shade to the full length of the lid and lacquer a strong black line beneath the lower lashes, winging it out into the cat's eye. Build up several coats of The Falsies Mascara, and contour cheekbone hollows with a deep bronze face powder. Finish with Deep Red Lipstick #645, or for the pink-glossed look, Tempting Toffee Lipgloss #55.

Even out the complexion with One Step Makeup. Wet the Stila eye shadow trio in Going Green to create an acrylic paintlike quality. Apply colour all over lid and up to brow, extending past the sides and undersides of the top and bottom eye lines. On the cheeks, Lucero applied a hot pink hue for a “flush” effect - she used Custom Color Blush. Long Wear Liquid Lip Color in Caprice was used on lips. Fuchsia pink lips lacquered the lips of models who added even more of a stain by licking lollipops and downing the Swedish Fish, Skittles, M&M's and Twizzlers available in candy plate spreads backstage.

Oscar de la Renta always promises high-glamour beauty, and this season was no exception, with a look inspired by Grace Kelly. Makeup artist and Revlon global artistic director Gucci Westman amplified the modern-day princess theme with bold color on the eyes.

After dusting the skin with loose powder, Page applied Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color in Tea Rose and Petal (depending on skin tone, some girls got a mix of two other shades, Orchid and Carnation) to the cheeks and the forehead. “The girl may have stayed out in the sun too long,” said Page of the shades of pink he applied to the forehead. He then added Shiseido Luminizing Satin Eye Color in Strata to the lids of the eyes, eschewing mascara and eyeliner. Lisa Butler, key makeup artist for Temptu Pro, took inspiration from the 1975 Australian flick “Picnic at Hanging Rock.” The film featured “romantic” makeup, which interpreted the Twenties through a Seventies lens. Hair, styled by Neil Moodie for Bumble and Bumble, was equally charming — a loose ballerina bun, with airy wisps surrounding the face.

“The hair is cool, a bit like an uptown lady who gets windswept, puts on a beanie and squashes the hell out of it,” Eugene Souleiman said of the style he created for Isaac Mizrahi’s show on Thursday. “It’s raw texture, cobwebby and dry.”

Makeup artist Dick Page applied what he called a “sick coral” hue on the lips. He began with a new Shiseido lipstick shade and blended into it white and pink theatrical pigments to arrive at the final lip color. “It makes the lip stand away from the face,” he said of the pout, which was blurred because Page’s team smudged the lips with fingertips after brushing on the color.

“There’s mascara, a groomed brow and a neutral face — more powdery than ordinary,” Page explained. “The details are the brow, lash and lip.

Souleiman, who was working on behalf of Wella Professionals, applied the brand’s Ocean Spritz spray as he blew out the hair. He described the overall look as a “complicated” chignon. An elegant, airy bun was the main element of the style, and it was formed by pulling the hair up into a ponytail, looping and pulling it through and out of the loop. Delicate ends of the messy ponytail hung over the top of the bun.

With the new Marchesa Color Collection for Le Métier de Beauté, it's obvious that the duo behind the brand care quite a bit about beauty and have opinions regarding it, so for the show, the right balance was made between gorgeous skin, meticulous makeup, and a defined hairstyle to compliment the embellished clothing.

GET THE LOOK

MAKEUP
Using brushes are the essence of achieving this look, and the goal is to make everything, including the hair, go in an upwards direction. For starters use the new Marchesa for Le Métier de Beauté Sheer Illumination Highlighter (which has some pink sheerness to it) in the t-zone and under the eyes. Apply a white matte cream shadow atthe lash line, blending upward. Use a larger blending brush to apply a taupe-colored eyeshadow over the lid and crease. Use this same shade of taupe under the cheekbones to add contour, and brush it again along the lower lash line, as well as a darker taupe hue just in the corner of the eye to visually enlarge it. Finalize the eye by taking a white eyeliner to create a "V" shape in the upper and lower inner corners. Finish off with lots of black mascara. On the lips, minimize the natural color by tapping on foundation before applying on a combination of Kona and Bali lip colors from the La Luna Palette in the Marchesa for Le Métier de Beauté collection. Pat the lipstick only on the inner part of the center of the lips.

HAIR
A textural foundation is integral to executing this look, and hair lead Renato Campora recommends blowing hair out back to front to tease hair at the roots and give it extra height and movement. Next, apply Essential Shea Tame & Style Pot de Créme to the hair, and create a high ponytail with a light braid, wrapping it around the base and securing it to the crown of the head with bobby pins. Pull just a few thin strands of hair out of the top of the braid, and use Fekkai Sheer Hold Hairspray to seal the style, spraying and combing the spritz in with a fine-toothed comb upwards in the back of the head, underneath the bun. Depending on their dress, some models' buns were flanked with ornate, one-piece jewels, supplied to Campora by Marchesa (no word yet if they will be available for sale).

Cool trenches, ruffles, and pretty turquoise prints were seen on the DKNY Spring 2011 runway, but the most influential piece on creating the hair look, according to Eugene Souleiman for Wella, was the assortment of scarves in the collection, found both cascading down the front on tops and tied neatly around the necks. "I thought it would be nice to have hair away from the face, not too hard, with a softness, a realness, a looseness (to it)."

GET THE LOOK
MAKEUP
Start with the Dream Liquid Mousse and Define-A-Brow Eyebrow Pencil in the shades closest to the skin and hair. Layer on top some Power Blush in Pink, and use the third from right eye shadow color in the Copper Chic Eye Quad Palette. In the center of the eye, above the iris on the lid, add the third color in the Persuasian Pink Eye Quad Palette, a shimmery color, to add just a "spark to the eye." Finish with the new Color Sensational Lip Stain In the Buff, a pale pink hue.

HAIR
Saturate hair with Velvet Amplifier, that acts as a "primer for the hair," and blow dry straight. Once you've created the curved, side part, bring hair into a centered, low ponytail. Grab about an inch down from the ponytail holder, and ponytail again, with the rest of the hair vertical and above the ponytail holder. Grab ponytail knob and turn clockwise about 45 degrees, so that the hair is moving from right to left, now to the side,with the remaining hair coming across the left shoulder. Finish off with some High Hair Styling Spray; Souleiman likes to first spray it on an oversized body powder brush, then smooth over the front of the hair.

Perdis says the three key elements to duplicating this look are primer, spray foundation, and mascara. For the full look, use the Napoleon Perdis Complex Skin Renewal Serum, followed by Auto Pilot Pre-Foundation Primer as the base, and Boudoir Mist Spray Foundation to perfect the skin. Next, apply some Set Concealer Pen under the eyes, and for eyeshadow use Color Disc in Trenchcoat, a beigey-gold hue. On the lashes use Mesmer-Eyes Mascara on both top and bottom eyelashes, but don't go too '60s -- just a few coats will do. Last, go pale and natural on the lips with the Lip Pencil in Nude Awakening and DeVine Goddess lipstick in Hess.

HAIR
Work Full Volume through the hair from roots to ends, followed by Coiff Bouffant Lifting and Texturizing Spray Gel. Blow dry with fingers, and separate hair into either a side or center part. Roll up the hair section by section, pin, and go about your routine of getting ready/putting on your makeup. Take the pins out, and finish with just a tiny bit of the Fekkai Coiff Nonchalant Piecing and Forming Wax.

Victoria Beckham presented her spring 2011 collection of supremely feminine and beautifully constructed dresses today. Vivid colors, from mandarin yellow to cotton candy pink, punctuated the collection, and exposed zippers, gentle draping and tucked and pleated details on parachute silk, jersey and lamé lent the collection that signature Victoria Beckham style. The makeup, by Charlotte Tilbury, was equally vivid.

GET THE LOOK
For eyes, Charlotte layered two purple Color Design Eye Shadows—Trendy and Drama—to get the desired finish. She lined the entire upper lashline with Artliner in Noir, complete with a “flick” at each end, and lined the lower lashline with black pencil. Hypnôse Custom Volume Mascara on the top and bottom lashes finished the eyes. Brows were left natural.

For lips, Charlotte used L’Absolu Rouge Lipstick in Rich Cashmere for the gingery pink color she wanted, and topped that with a thick layer of Juicy Tubes in Pure, a clear gloss, for a dramatically lacquered look. The skin was super dewy, achieved with just foundation and highlighter. Charlotte swept the new Teint Miracle foundation over the entire face. Éclat Miracle Serum (a new liquid highlighter) was dabbed along the cheekbone and up the temple in a backwards C-shape. She didn’t use any blush or powder.

He finished the look by using a waiving tool to make an unexpected single crimp across the back of the hair. The result was a modern take on a mod era.

GET THE LOOK
This look is all about 1940s glamour and to prep for locks Sean James started with René Furterer Volumea Volumizing Foam. "We worked the foam through the hair with a brush," says Sean, "quickly blow-drying hair to smooth out any frizziness. The Volumea foam helps to set the hair."

Next, Sean created a side part for the ultimate 1940s drama and then sprayed a three-inch wide section of hair with a lightweight finishing spray before he coiled it around a one-inch curling iron rod. "We use the spray to set the hair as its very malleable. When I see a little steam rise, I know the hair is set. After the rod slips out, we secure the curl with a pin-curl clip." Once the curls cooled, the clips were removed and hair was brushed through with a boar bristle brush.

The sexy cat-eye was achieved with Jouer black liquid eyeliner along with Make Up Forever lashes. Jouer Lipstick in Simone (available at JouerCosmetics.com for $22)—a striking bright red—gave each girl a voluptuous pout. Lastly, strong brows framed their faces.

Use a medium-barrel curling iron to curl the front section, working with approximately two inches of hair at a time. Twist the remaining hair into the updo, pinning to secure. Apply Aveda Brilliant™ Spray-On Shine to the top and side sections for a super-wet look. Use fingers to tousle the updo for a bit of texture and messiness. Allow hair to dry before attaching three or four simple black barrettes to one side of the head.

NAILS
The nail color was an end result of mixing four colors together - Kelly, Angela, Purity, and Snow White for a look resulting in "ethereal putty." Depending on the model's skin tone resulted in the overall mixture combo. Try the same thing at home, seeing what looks best with your skin tone and mix colors by dumping some out of one bottle, pouring more of another in, and rolling, not shaking the bottle to blend it.

Models were grouped according to "girl-girl" and "girl-boy" designs, with the former wearing sunkissed cheeks, dew-kissed eyes and clear lip balm, while the latter took on an edgier look with black-rimmed eyes and liquid liner that was applied in the crease for a messy, jagged and lived-in look. "These are girls that spend their summers outdoors," said Dick Page.

For Boy, a striking "transfer eye" was created by smudging black pencil at the lash line and in the socket, followed by a coat of Shiseido Full Correction Lip Treatment (a clear balm) on the entire lid, and Automatic Fine Liquid Eyeliner (applied with a brush) at the outer corners for added intensity. The desired finish revealed itself after a few minutes, as the balm began to blur the dark lines. The eyes were then completed using Defining Mascara in black.

The focus shifted away from the eyes for Girl., with a flushed cheek and lip taking center stage. Page used a damp sponge to apply Shiseido Shimmering Rouge in Golden Dragon RD601 (new for spring) at the temples, across the apples of the cheeks (towards the eyes), along the bridge of the nose and on the lips. Keeping in tune with his natural flair for experimenting with color, Jason Wu drew inspiration for his ladylike designs from Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes. The beauty teams pulled aspects from the painter's abstract, dual dimensions artworks and created hair and makeup masterpieces.

Makeup: To recreate the purple eye makeup look, smooth on a purple cream base like in the outer corner, blending in and over outer eye. Apply a deep purple pigment on outer corner and top with a violet pigment, puling out at the corners and blending with a clean brush. Line under eye with rich purple eye pencil and blend. Smooth on black cream liner to top and bottom of lash line and coat top lashes with Mascara. Brush on Shiseido Luminizing Satin Face Color in PK 304 Carnation on cheeks and temple.
Nails: To complement his vivid color palette and 40′s/70′s silhouettes, Jason Wu chose classic oxblood red Veronica Colour from his new collection for manicures. Pedicures were done in peachy nude Perfectly Bare Colour from CND’s limited edition Spring Colour & Effect duo (available in March 2011).

Lottie created a fresh, “cool girl” look for the models, focusing on dewy skin, groomed brows and natural lips. The focal point of the look was “lived in” eyeliner which was smoked out on the bottom lash line to create intensity.

Makeup How-to
Complexion & Cheeks: Lottie first applied Make Up For Ever HD Invisible Cover Foundation for a flawless complexion, and then applied Make Up For Ever Pan Cake #3 on top to give the skin a soft, dewy glow. To add a contour to the cheeks, Lottie used Make Up For Ever Sculpting Kit #10 and #20 for definition, and finished with Make Up For Ever Sculpting Blush #20 for a pop of color.
Eyes: Make Up For Ever Pearly Waterproof Eye Shadow Pencil #13 was used all over the eye for highlighting the lid and crease. A thick coat of Make Up For Ever Smoky Lash completed the eyes, and lastly, Make Up For Ever Eyebrow Pencil was used to fill in the brows for a well-groomed yet natural look.

A.J. was inspired by the beautiful colors in the collection, as well as the structure of the clothing. To bring the make up to life, A.J. created a colorful cat eye that was bold yet simple at the same time.

GET THE LOOK
Complexion: The complexion was fresh and sunny. A.J. first applied Make Up For Ever Face & Body Foundation to give the skin a healthy spring-time glow. Make Up For Ever Aqua Cream #10 was dusted on the cheeks and then blended into the skin for a soft wash of orange color. To illuminate the face, Make Up For Ever Star Powder #940 was swept along the upper cheek bones and the top of the nose.
Eyes: The eyes were the focal point of the look. A.J. created a strong cat eye using either Make Up For Ever Aquarelle #3 (blue) or Aquarelle #6 (green) on alternating models. Aquarelle was applied to the eyes using a liner brush to create a modified cat eye shape – the wing was extended beyond the outer edge of the eye for a burst of color, and there was additional detail on the lid for a peek-a-boo effect.
Lips: The lips were neutral and muted slightly with Make Up For Ever Face & Body Foundation to create a clean canvas that allowed the rest of the face to stand out.

Acclaimed make up artist Kabuki served as key artist for the Park Choon Moo Spring/Summer 2011 fashion show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. Kabuki wanted to create a look that was light, airy and unexpected. The make up was muted to complement the clothes.

After six years designing gorgeous dresses for the Hollywood set, why try your hands at makeup?
GC/KC: When creating the collections for our shows, we always found that makeup played an integral part in the completion of the overall look and feel of the season. It was important for us that our makeup line reflect the same level of craftsmanship synonymous with Marchesa, and Le Métier was the ideal partner for this. We had always loved their products, both for their fantastic quality as well as their unique aesthetic appeal.

How did you arrive at the range in its final incarnation?
We really just opened up our own makeup bags and decided which items we couldn’t live without. Once we decided on what these basics were, we spent hours trying on an endless rainbow of colors and finishes to develop palettes that would work for a broad range of looks as well as day-to-day coverage. We decided on these particular combos because they worked for all our beauty needs.

As far as the general inspiration for the new line, what was your main goal with the palettes, the lip duos, and the pens?
We have very chaotic schedules that require us to consistently get ready on the go, so our ideal product was one that could encompass everything you needed for a complete look (concealer/powder/shadow/lip) in one slim, easy-to-carry package. Nail guru Jin Soon Choi will be making her second appearance backstage to provide pro manis and pedis with a new polish from the New York makeup giant’s forthcoming Relaunch Collection. Beginning next March, Estée Lauder will be debuting a range of eight permanent and eight limited-edition lacquers that brings back discontinued old favorites and introduces new colors—all with its True Vision Technology that wraps concentrated pigments into a crystalline laminate for a multi-dimensional look.
